African Flowers- Granny Hexies

Hello, I just uploaded a video few days ago, and here is the written pattern. Sidenote: the videos on my channel are currently in Cantonese and their written patterns are in English. Why bi-lingual? I think I could explain with better clarity in my native tongue while it is easier to provide the pattern note in English. ( Imagine you need to do computer programming with Chinese characters… This is what happens if someone writes pattern in Chinese) Written patterns in this blog are the revised version of the patterns on the video. I think the demos in the video is quite self- explanatory, and no one wants to read lots when they are watching videos, so I only keep the annotation in written patterns.

So, let’s back to the topic today 🙂 This African flowers look complicated but the pattern is rather simple. From R1-R3, We are going to make 6 identical clusters in each rounds to form a flower, then, from R4, we will crochet the flower motif into a hexagon.

Abbreviations ( US Term)

Single Crochet (sc)
Double Crochet ( dc )
BLOdc (Back Loop Only double crochet)
Chain ( ch )
slip stitch (slst)
[XXX]* N times – repeat XXX for N times

Materials and Tools

Worsted yarn of 4 colours ( pink, navy, white, grey, sharp pink)
5mm hook

I choose rather heavy yarn for this project , so I can make the motifs bigger in size. You are welcome to use yarn you like with appropriate hook.

Pattern

Foundation: MR, work in rounds

R1: With colour A , 1ch(isn’t counted as a stitch), [2dc,1ch]*6times , slst on the first dc of this round, change to colour B

R2: In this round all the stitches are worked in the ch1-spaces formed in R1. With colour A , insert the hook into the ch1-space, 3ch(counted as 1dc), 1dc, 1ch, 2dc,

[Insert the hook into the next ch1-space, 1dc, 1dc, 1ch, 2dc] * 5times, so you will have 6 clusters in R2. slst on the 3rd ch at the beginning , dont cut off the yarn. Continue R3 with the same yarn

R3: work 2slst , then you will find your hook in the ch1-space of R2, work 3ch(counted as 1dc) ,6dc. Then [ insert the hook into the next ch1-space, work 7dc ]* 5times. So you will have SIX 7-dc-clusters (i.e. 7petals) in total. Cut off the yarn, hide the end.

the very long white stitches on the conjunction of petals are
Cross-round-sc.

R4: Start this round with colour C, pick a 7dc-cluster, then identify the first dc in the cluster, work a ch then 7sc ( i.e. work a sc on each dc of R3) . In the conjunction of 2petals, work a cross-round-sc. A simple cross-round-sc is below, or you could see the demo in video.
In brief, work a normal sc, but insert the hook into the conjunction of petals ( not the stitches) on R2, yarn over, pull up the loop so that it crosses 2rounds, then yarn over again , pull the yarn through the 2loops on the hook.

To finish the round, slst, cut off the yarn.

R5: While R4 like a contour of a flower, there should 7 sc between two cross-round-sc. On the 5th sc, start with colour D,1ch ( isn’t counted a stitch ) , BLOdc, 6BLOdc, then the next stitch should be the convex point of a petal, on here work BLOdc,2ch,BLOdc . The first pattern of R5is done, then….

[7BLOdc,BLOdc,2ch,BLOdc]*5times. You will find a Hexagon with a beautiful flower inside 🙂

Well Done. You make it !

With the hexies, you could make bags or blankets in unlimited ways and colour combination !

If you made this Wild Flowers pls tag or DM IG@wendyknitly , so that I can share and like as well !
If you have any suggestion of improvement on the pattern, welcome to DM me on IG, so I could improve my upcoming patterns as well.

Pls do not sell or copy this pattern. However, you could re-post the pattern and sell the finished products as long as you credit @wendyknitly.

Thanks for dropping by. Happy crocheting!
