Sunflower Granny Squares

This post is part I of [ How I crochet a sunflower bucket hat] Making the hat itself is not difficult , but it is quite a big project. Breaking it down may help most of us , so today, I would share the pattern of the sunflowers on the side of the hat. Those flowers are actually a Sunflower Granny Square ( i.e.Flower gr sq ) .

Are you ready? Here we go !

Tools and Materials

2 skein of fine cotton( 100g/280m) , crocheting with 2 strings at the same time.
Totally used 123g in my demo
4mm hook
scissors and darning needles

Guage
4cm X 4cm = 7dc X 3rows
1 Flower Sq is about 9cm X 9cm.

Abbreviation

We will make the following stitches （US terms ) in this pattern:
sc = single crochet
DC = Double crochet
2DCtog= make 2HC into 1 st
HDC = Half double crochet
Popcorn = 4HDC Popcorn
trDC = treble crochet
st = stitch
R = Round
() = total no. of stitches in the round

Tips – Popcorn stitch

How to make a neat Popcorn stitch( i.e. sunflower petals )? — Video Demo
Yarn over and insert your hook into the indicated space.  < Yarn over again and pull up a long loop , about a finger width long.> Repeat <> 3 more times. You should now have 9 loops on your hook.

Yarn over and pull through the 8loops on your hook.  Now you have 2 loops on the hook, Yarn over , make a sc to close the Popcorn Stitch .

Pattern

R1: 12 DC ,slst on the first st of this round.( 12 )

R2: ( 1popcron , 2ch ) *3times,slst on the first st of this round. ( 36 )

R3: In R3, we will work on the 2ch-sapce formed on R2.
Insert the hook into a 2ch-space,work 3ch( counted as 1DC), 1DC, 1ch ,2DCtog, 1ch. So you will find 2 DC clusters in 1space.

Repeat the following group of stitches for 2 times:

Insert the hook into the next space, ( 2trDCtog, 3ch,2trDCtog, 1ch). Now you will find the 3ch form a corner like shape.
{Insert the hook into the next space, ( 2DCtog, 1ch,) } *2 times.

Insert the hook into the last 2ch-space in this round, ( 2DCtog, 1ch,),slst on the first st of this round. ( 56)

DONE !

If you would use this motif in the bucket hat, there are 2 ways to form the circumference of the hat

option 1: sew it when all the 6 Flower gr sq are done.
