Sunflower Bucket Hat

{中文圖樣, 稍後上載}

Hi there~ This post is about how I crochet a bucket hat with the Sunflowers Granny Square. There are 3 parts in the bucket hat. If you have crocheted the 6 Sunflower Granny Squares, which are sewn into a ring, the remaining parts would be rather easy. so … Let’s jump to the working part NOW 🙂

Tools and Materials

2 skein of fine cotton( 100g/280m) , crocheting with 2 strings at the same time.
Totally used 123g in the bucket hat
4mm hook
scissors and darning needles

Guage
4cm X 4cm = 7dc X 3rows
1 Flower Sq is about 9cm X 9cm.

Abbreviation

We will make the following stitches (US terms ) in this pattern:
sc = single crochet
DC = Double crochet
2DCtog= make 2HC into 1 st
HDC = Half double crochet
Popcorn = 4HDC Popcorn
trDC = treble crochet
st = stitch
R = Round
() = total no. of stitches in the round

The Squares

For making a square, please refer to the specific post, since it carries quite a few steps and I don’t want to make this post intimidatingly long. Here I will explain more the ” join as you go ” method. If you like to sew the squares together with the darning needles, it’s totally fine !

First, we will make 1 complete square. Then, we start crocheting 2nd one as usual, when we arrive the last round of the 2nd square, we normally start in the middle of one side, complete this side, then move on to the next side. From here , we can connect the squares as we crochet.

connecting the squares by “join as you go” method

Before we make the first ch at the corner , we insert the hook from front to back into the ch-2 space of the other completed square, then make a ch ( i.e. yarn over, pull through ) You could see the 2 pieces of square is linked up. The last round of the Sunflower granny square is composed of ch, dc-, trdc-, clusters. So we applied the same joining method as we make the ch while work the dc -clusters ( and also trdc -clusters) as usual.

If you prefer a visual illustration, pls check out this session of the video.

We can work normally after we joined this side. Repeat the same for the next 4 squares.

To make a ring , you need to join 2 sides of the last square to the other squares.

In the last square, pls remember we have to join the 2nd and 4th side of the square to the other squares, so as to form a ring. Again, you could check out the video for demo.

Crown

For the crown, we will start from the top. Make a circle , then join the crown to the square-ring ( aka the circumference).

Pattern of the crown:

Notes:

-Dc in all the rounds
– Crochet in rounds. To change round, slst to the first st then ch1 ( this is not counted as a st) then start the dc ( this is the first dc of the round)

R1: Mr,12 dc , slst to the first dc ,ch1 ( 12 )
R2: 12 dc-inc , slst to the first dc ,ch1(24)
R3: (dc, dc-inc) *12 times , slst to the first dc ,ch1(36)
R4: (2dc, dc-inc) *12 times, slst to the first dc ,ch1(48)
R5: (3dc, dc-inc) *12 times , slst to the first dc ,ch1(60)
R6: (4dc, dc-inc) *12 times , slst to the first dc ,ch1(72)
R7: (5dc, dc-inc,)*12 times, slst to the first dc ,ch1 (84)
R8: (13dc, dc-inc) *12 times, slst to the first dc ,ch1(90)

Now the crown and the circumference are ready. My hat is in one colour, I like to enrich the texture, so I joined the 2 pieces by Zig Zag method. Again,you can simply sew them together.
There should be 90st on one side the circumference. Math time :
> 14st in one side of the square + the joining point is counted as 1 st = 15st per square
> 15st X6squares= 90st.
90st in the circumference VS 90st around the crown.

If we make the math above clear , the joining process will be much clearer.

Join the crown and the circumference by Zig Zag method . Parallel the 2 pieces along side, pick a st on the crown ,work 1 slst, then insert the hook to the circumference, make a slst. This is the first pair of slst. We are going to make 90 pairs of slst in total, since there are 90st on each pieces we need to join. For video demo,pls click here.

Now, we just need to crochet the brim, then our beautiful hat is called DONE~~~~

Brim to be done~

Brim

-sc in all the rounds
-Crochet in rounds. To change round, slst to the first st then ch1 ( this is not counted as a st) then start the sc ( this is the first sc of the round)
-1 sc on each st of the circumference. Excpet that, 2ch in the corner space.
-the joining point of 2squares is counted as 1 st.

Pattern
R1: Put the pieces that the crown pointing downwards, pick a right corner space of the squares, start crosheting. 2 sc in the corner space, then 11sc , 2 sc in the corner space , 1 sc in the joinin point. So totally 16sc on 1 side of the square. Repeat 5more times. ( 96sc )

R2-R7: sc around ( 96 )

You could make more rounds ( or less ) to achieve the length you prefer 🙂

The hat is basically DONE !!! Congratulations!

I make the last round by reverse single crochet to add some personal touch. You could see the process here ~~~~

I hope you enjoy the tutorials ! If you made this ” Sunflower Granny Squares” with this pattern, pls tag or DM IG@wendyknitly , so that I can share and like as well !Thank you!
